Description

Agar-agar powder is a seaweed-based plant-based gelatin. Vegetable gelatin comes in flake, powder, bar, and strand form and can be used as a thickening and stabilizing component in recipes.

Cosmetic agar is used as a gelling, thickener and stabilizer agent. Stable and inert, it forms reversible gels very useful for cosmetics formulations such as creams, emulsions, suspensions, dispersions, capsules, gels etc.

INCI

Gelidium Amansii (Agar)

Appearance

Fine, white-yellow powder

Usage rate

0.1-2.0%

Applications
  • Infused in creams, lotions, and ointments
  • Added to soap recipes
  • In face mask formulas
  • In shampoo recipes
  • As an ingredient in body washes
  • In pomade formulas
  • In balms
  • In cosmetic products like mascara
How to Work with It

Agar is able to absorb as much as twenty times its weight and dissolves readily in boiling water. Its high heat tolerance, solidifying at just under 40°C, makes it ideal for cosmetic uses. Agar Agar is able to form gels far below the melting temperature and is able to gel at concentrations as low as 0.04%, though it is ideally used at 1-2% concentrations in your final formulation.

Scent Slight seaweed odor
Solubility Insoluble in cold water. Slightly soluble in warm water. Soluble in boiling water.
pH 5-8
Why do we use it in formulations?

The agar-agar is one of the most commonly used elements due to its suspensive, emulsifying, stabilizing and gelling properties that add no oil to the product, which is a very important feature when developing skin products. In addition, it is non-toxic and non-irritating, essential for people with skin conditions.

Strengths Agar is a jelly-like substance derived from red algae. It is used to gel, thicken, and stabilize cosmetic formulations.
Benefits
  • Adhesive for make-up products (e.g. facilitates the adhesion of mascara).
  • Stabilizer for emulsions
  • Lifting and strengthening
  • Combats dehydration

While we do not offer products for internal use, we source only high-quality, pharmaceutical or food-grade ingredients. Ingredient purity and performance are critical in cosmetic applications, just as they are in ingestible products.

Just because two products have the same name or CAS number does not guarantee the same grade, purity, or effectiveness. Always choose trusted suppliers. Choose Purenso for premium-grade ingredients you can rely on.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The outer surface can hydrate before the inner powder wets. Sprinkle slowly into good agitation or pre-disperse in a compatible non-water medium when suitable.

No. Natural gums differ in hydration speed, gel character, electrolyte tolerance and sensory feel. Reformulate and compare rather than swapping percentages.

Potentially, if the final system develops enough yield value. Suspension depends on particle size, density and the complete rheology system.

No. A gum or thickener does not replace a broad-spectrum preservative. Water-containing formulas still need appropriate microbial protection.

Hydration can continue after mixing and temperature can change polymer structure. Judge final viscosity only after full hydration and equilibration.

Yes. Electrolytes, acids, solvents and charged ingredients can change gum hydration and gel strength. Add challenging ingredients before the final viscosity decision.

Clarity depends on the gum grade and use level. Natural gums often create some haze, so do not promise crystal clarity without testing.

Excessive shear can introduce air and may damage some polymer structures. Prevent lumps through dispersion technique rather than relying only on prolonged high shear.

Keep the powder tightly closed and dry. Moisture pickup causes caking and inconsistent hydration.

Check hydration time, viscosity, pH, syneresis, suspension, preservation and package dispensing after the formula has fully equilibrated.

Agar typically requires heating for full dissolution and then gels on cooling. Design the process around the exact grade and other heat-sensitive ingredients.
