Oil-Soluble Extracts Explained

It Prepared via a cold process to avoid potential loss of effectiveness heat processing can have. Created from naturally grown materials which are extracted first with a specified eluant to yield a concentrate. This concentrate is then dissolved in safflower oil at a concentration of 10% concentrate and 90% diluents. Unlike their water-soluble counterparts, oil-soluble extracts are concentrated flavors dissolved in an oil base, such as vegetable oil, instead of water or alcohol.

Hibiscus Liquid Extract

Extract obtained from Hibiscus Rosa-Senensis (Hibsicus) flowers. Has great antioxidant, toning and purifying properties. Useful for formulations targeting skin tone, anti-cellulite and refirming products. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

No. An oil-soluble botanical extract is a formulated extract intended for oil-compatible systems. Its composition and concentration differ from an essential oil, infused oil or cold-pressed carrier oil.

Usually yes if the complete oil blend is compatible. Check colour, odour, clarity and oxidation stability, and remember that an anhydrous oil product still needs hygienic manufacture and suitable antioxidant strategy where relevant.

No. The solvent system, concentration and phase behaviour are different. Treat it as a reformulation and reassess the oil phase, sensory feel, colour and stability.

It can. Even an oil-soluble extract may carry natural colour or fine insoluble matter, and compatibility can change with different esters, silicones or hydrocarbons. Test the exact oil blend for clarity over time and at different temperatures.

Not directly. A water-based formula needs an appropriate emulsifying or solubilising approach to incorporate oil-soluble materials. Simply stirring harder does not create long-term compatibility.

Avoid unnecessary prolonged heating unless the current supplier documentation for the exact grade supports it. Add at the lowest practical processing temperature that still gives good incorporation.

Yes. Treat the as-supplied extract as part of the oil-side material balance when designing emulsions or anhydrous blends, especially when texture and emulsifier demand are sensitive to oil loading.

No. A botanical extract carried in oil and a pure fixed oil have different fatty-acid profiles, concentration and sensory properties. Recalculate the formula rather than making a direct swap.

Natural extractives can vary or slowly oxidise, and fine plant-derived matter may settle. Compare against the raw-material specification and investigate any major odour, colour or performance change before use.

Yes, if the complete system remains compatible, but total extract and carrier loading still matters. Check oxidation, colour, odour, emulsion stability and skin feel instead of evaluating each extract independently.
