 Description

It is a gelling agent and pseudo-emulsifier. It is pre-neutralized (unlike some carbomers, which are extremely acidic and need to be mixed with a strong base like NaOH after hydrating to bring the pH up) and has a much higher electrolyte tolerance (up to 10% salt). When used to produce a transparent aqueous gel, it produces products with an elegant skin feel and velvety touch.

INCI

Polyacrylate crosspolymer-6

Appearance

Slightly lumpy white powder

Texture

Polyacrylate crosspolymer-6 creates rich, velvety feeling gels.

Usage rate

Recommended usage levels: 0.15–5%

  • Emulsifier-stabilizer and thickener - 0.5 - 5%
  • Suspending properties - from 0.15%
Applications

Lotions, emulsified scrubs, creams, hair conditioners, detanglers, deep conditioning relaxers, and many other popular personal care products.

How to Use

Pre-disperse this powder in the liquid oil or glycerin in a formulation before adding water or water-like ingredients (hydrosols, aloe vera juice, etc.). Cover the mixture and leave it to rest for at least an hour to allow to hydrate, and then stir thoroughly to combine.

pH

Stable between pH 2 - pH 8

Scent

Nothing noticeable

Solubility

Water

Why do we use it in formulations? It thickens our formulations. In lower concentrations, it can suspend ingredients like glitter and exfoliants, and in higher concentrations, it can create rich feeling transparent gels and gel-creams. It can also stabilize oils, creating pseudo-emulsions. It has a lovely sensory profile, and can be used to thicken surfactant products while also increasing and improving the foam.
Strengths

Creates lovely, smooth gels and has a higher electrolyte tolerance than other gelling agents. I also like that it is pre-neutralized, meaning you don’t have to add a strong base like NaOH after hydrating it.

Benefits:
  • Efficient use at low levels
  • High resistance to electrolytes
  • Wide pH range, even at acidic pH
  • Suspending properties
  • Synergies with other polymers or emulsifiers
  • Elegant sensory profile
  • No neutralization
  • Can be used in hot and cold process formulations
  • No clumping

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

No, this type of pre-neutralised polymer is designed to thicken without a separate neutralisation step. Final viscosity still depends on pH, electrolytes, solvents and processing.

It is selected for relatively good tolerance to salts and challenging actives compared with some traditional carbomers, but every high-electrolyte formula still needs a stability trial.

No. Polymer grade is only one factor; extracts, surfactants, fragrance, oils, salts and air bubbles can all reduce clarity.

Do not rely on it as the sole emulsifier for a conventional oil-in-water emulsion. Use an appropriate emulsifying system and treat the polymer as a rheology/stabilisation aid unless the exact formula has been validated otherwise.

Even electrolyte-tolerant polymers have limits. Add the most challenging ingredients before final viscosity adjustment and measure again after the formula has fully equilibrated.

Not simply because the gel is thick. Oil-soluble fragrance still needs a compatible solubilising or emulsifying strategy; otherwise droplets, haze or separation can develop.

Not always. Solvent level, ionic load, pH and mixing history can change the viscosity response, and excess polymer can hurt sensory feel.

It can help build yield value and suspension, but particle density and size matter. Verify settling in the final formula over the intended shelf life.

High viscosity can hold air introduced during mixing. Reduce vortexing, allow deaeration time and consider vacuum processing for larger batches.

After all salts, actives and solvents are added and the batch has reached final pH and temperature. Immediate mixer-side viscosity can be misleading.
