Description

Sodium Alginate is a natural, water-soluble polysaccharide that produces a gel consistency when hydrated and imparts an excellent skin feel.  Sodium Alginate has been used in the medical field, in the food industry, and more recently in cosmetics as a skin care ingredient.

Sodium Alginate, also commonly known as Jelly Bomb Powder, is an emulsifier or thickener that creates a gel like substance, much like jello.

INCI

Sodium Alginate

Appearance

Off-White, free-flowing powder

Usage rate

0.2% - 5%

Applications Used in gels, emulsions, facemasks, shampoos, bath bombs, etc.
How to Work with It Sprinkle slowly into your water while using your stick blender, otherwise the mixture will clump up and may take days to combine.
Scent Nothing much
Solubility Soluble in Water/Not soluble in Oils
pH 8.5-10.5
Why do we use it in formulations?

Most commonly used as a thickening agent.

It helps to preserve moisture in cosmetics and is used as a foam stabiliser in shampoos as well as an emulsion stabiliser in lotions and creams.

It's a fine white, somewhat milky powder that gels without the need of heat, meaning it turns into jelly when exposed to water.

Strengths Sodium alginate, like most seaweed-derived products, softens and calms the skin.
Tips, Tricks, and Quirks

Sodium Alginate will help to soften, hydrate, and soothe skin and leave it feeling silky and soft. To create a skin care serum or hair gel using water, infusions, distillates, water-soluble extracts, etc., add Sodium Alginate and allow to hydrate for 30-60 minutes

-Easily dispersible in room temperature water (allow 30 – 60 minutes for complete hydration)

Benefits
  • Leaves skin feeling silky, rich and soft.
  • It has no flavour or odour.
  • Helps create foam.
  • Water-soluble dissolves quickly with agitation.
  • It is completely natural with no chemical modification
  • Low toxicity

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The outer surface can hydrate before the inner powder wets. Sprinkle slowly into good agitation or pre-disperse in a compatible non-water medium when suitable.

No. Natural gums differ in hydration speed, gel character, electrolyte tolerance and sensory feel. Reformulate and compare rather than swapping percentages.

Potentially, if the final system develops enough yield value. Suspension depends on particle size, density and the complete rheology system.

No. A gum or thickener does not replace a broad-spectrum preservative. Water-containing formulas still need appropriate microbial protection.

Hydration can continue after mixing and temperature can change polymer structure. Judge final viscosity only after full hydration and equilibration.

Yes. Electrolytes, acids, solvents and charged ingredients can change gum hydration and gel strength. Add challenging ingredients before the final viscosity decision.

Clarity depends on the gum grade and use level. Natural gums often create some haze, so do not promise crystal clarity without testing.

Excessive shear can introduce air and may damage some polymer structures. Prevent lumps through dispersion technique rather than relying only on prolonged high shear.

Keep the powder tightly closed and dry. Moisture pickup causes caking and inconsistent hydration.

Check hydration time, viscosity, pH, syneresis, suspension, preservation and package dispensing after the formula has fully equilibrated.

Alginate can crosslink with multivalent ions such as calcium. Control mineral content and water quality because calcium can dramatically change gel structure.
